SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT - GIG 1005

TINKERCAD MENTORING PROGRAM

Name : Muhammad Nur Iman Bin Mohd Shamsul Amri

Matrics No : 17089325/2 (KIG190112)

In this blog, i would like to share the journey on how our social engagement project was done.

(BEFORE THE PROGRAM)

1st IDEA...But AHHH, NOOO!!!

This project was done by a group of 8 members and Sofwan was a leader of this fantastic group and our group is known as SOKJU. We had several meeting and discussions on Google Meet. First meeting, we discussed on what type of project we should do, who is our target and how the project could be executed perfectly. We were brainstorming ideas on choosing which communities to engage and in the early stage we were planning to teach Physics subject to Form 3 students. All of us have agreed on the idea, and we have tried to find any school that can cooperate with us. After few days, we have found one school which is Tahfiz school and the principal has agreed to let us teach the students. Unfortunately, at the last minute, the Tahfiz had to cancel the program due to a few circumstances.
We were left disappointed and we did not have any backup idea to continue our project.

THE SOLUTION

Sofwan as a group leader, tried to get help from our coordinator for this subject which is Dr. Norhafizan. Then, Dr has suggested us to participate in helping form 2 and form 3 students from SMK Seksyen 4 Bandar Kinrara in solving their aquaponic system using Tinkercad.

THE REAL DISCUSSION BEGUN...YEEHAAA

After confirming that we are going to mentor the students, we had a brief discussion that was lead by Sofwan on what we are going to do during the program. Sofwan told us that the school required us to solve the problem of the aquaponic system, like on what actions the school should take when the school having blackout. We have decided to use Tinkercad software which is free to sign in, and friendly user, to guide the students on how to use it, and teach them on how to build a circuit in solving the aquaponic system.

PREPARATION

All of us get ready with our task.  Each member has their own task or part like prepared the slides, prepare question for the students and so on. Sofwan, engaged with their RBT teachers on how the program will be done and we were busy preparing for our part, even though it was tiring, but for me personally, i can't wait to meet and interact with the students. Whatsapp group was created among mentors, students and also teachers to ease the communication.

(DURING THE PROGRAM)

Our program was being scheduled as followed:

1st DAY

We had 4 session on different days. On the first day, Imran, Wit, and Yusri conducted the program by introducing and guiding the students on how to build an electric circuit using Tinkercad. All the students seemed to enjoy the session as it was their first time in building a simulation electric circuit. The mentors guided them perfectly, and the students also can follow the teaching process. The students, then, were asked to show their circuit by sending it in the whatsapp group and most of them were participating and being responsive.

2nd DAY (My part)

Me and Irfan conducted on the second day. We introduced the students with coding also by using Tinkercad. In my part, i explained what is the function of the Arduino, the function of each block in coding and so on. For irfan part, he taught them on how to build a coding after constructing the circuit using the arduino. The students did enjoy the session and they understood how the coding are performed.

3rd DAY

On the next day, Aiman and Sofwan handle the program by giving them one situation or one problem and they need to solve it in the group. Surprisingly, they managed to solve it within the given time.

4th DAY

On the last day, Hazmie and Sofwan took charge in guiding the students to solve the real aquaponic problem. They showed the students on how to build the real circuit and the real coding. At the end of the session, we did give them quiz to test their understanding based on what they have learned using Kahoot platform. After finishing all the quiz session with the students, we had a prize giving ceremony for the best group and the best 2 students. It was valued on how they participated during all 4 sessions, they cooperation in the group assignment and so on. Lastly, we took some pictures together for memories. THANK YOU SMK SEKSYEN 4 BANDAR KINRARA!!!

(AFTER THE PROGRAM)

After almost one week mentoring the students, we need to prepare one youtube video. We need to record ourselves based on the given script prepared by Sofwan. Our video is in the link below

https://youtu.be/cfwpABTBKh8

I would like to say Thank You to Smk Seksyen 4 Bandar Kinrara for allowing us in teaching and guiding the students to solve their Aquaponic system. Without the cooperation of the school, our project could not be done perfectly. Although, the program has ended, we as mentors always in standby mode in case the teachers and students ask for help and our whatsapp group with the students and teachers is still exist.

Apart from that, we need to do a report and one of us has their own part to do. All of these task need to be submitted before 20/6/2021.

CONCLUSION

To conclude, it was a great experience to engage with secondary school students as they are committed , responsible and dedicated. We as mentors need a social skill in order to make the communication effective. We also need to be prepared physically and mentally to ensure the program runs smoothly and well performed. The end.

The journey of the program (Muhamad Imran - 17203007/2)

Muhamad Imran bin Abdul Aziz KIG190520 (17203007/2) BEFORE THE PROGRAM PREFACE From our social engagement class, we were supposed to form a group and fulfil the tasks handed to us through the group course work. We formed a group consisting of 8 members, all of whom study mechanical engineering and happen to be my batchmates. Initially, I only happen to know just a few of my group members, however the chemistry of the group gradually increased as we did some ice-breaking sessions via Google Meet. Within days of group formation, we conducted several online meetings to discuss about exciting & feasible projects that can be done. We ended up choosing to teach high schoolers around the ages of 14 & 15 about Physics and its applications. We contacted a variety of different public schools and eventually a Tahfiz school agreed with our proposal to teach their students. Despite preparing ourselves for this, the principal of the school backed down and the program had to be canc...

REFLECTION THROUGH MY LENS ( Muhammad Irfan Harith KIG190511)

THE START. At the start of the semester, honestly, I had a negative feeling towards this social engagement course. I felt that it was going to be a burden and hindrance towards my time and would clash with the other courses that I’m taking in the semester. From the late class sessions to the to the confusion in understanding the objective and ways to execute this course, it was really a rough start to the whole subject, for me at least, and it was hard for me to enjoy my time during this course. Luckily for me, I found the best group mates that made this course a breeze. THE CHALLENGE In my previous studies, I have had experienced organizing and taking part in a social engagement program. It was fairly simple and straight forward. Search for a place or community, decide on a community, contact the community, organize games and activities, give out prizes, help them clean and tidy the place up and you are done. This time around, the university requires us to incorpor...
